Diabetic clinics are held at Berry Lane
Medical centre on Tueday and Wednesday. |
Diabetes Services
Diabetic Clinics are run twice weekly at the surgery by practice nurses, the
aim of the clinic is to help the patient achieve the best possible control of
their diabetes and to ensure good quality of life and longevity.
This is achieved by educating the patient regarding diabetes and how to take control
of their own care.
What is Diabetes?
People with diabetes have a higher than normal level of glucose in their blood
stream.
The food we eat provides the energy we need. The body converts most of the food
we need into glucose.
Insulin is the transport system, which carries the glucose to the cells of the
body to be utilised. Diabetes occurs if the pancreas (an organ which produces
insulin) does not produce enough insulin or if the body does not respond to your
own insulin quite as well as it should. Therefore if the insulin level is decreased
then the glucose level rises.
How is it Treated?
This depends on what sort of diabetes you have. Type 1 or Insulin dependent diabetes
usually occurs in people under the age of 40 years. There is a severe shortage
of insulin as most of the cells in the pancreas have been destroyed.
This type of diabetes is treated by giving injections of insulin.
Type 2 or Insulin dependent diabetes usually occurs in people over the age of
40. It is treated by diet alone or diet and tablets or by diet and insulin injections.
